Diving into an Unusual Steam Demo: Playing as a Piece of Feces on a Quest to Reach the Toilet
Steam Next Fest is currently underway, and gamers have discovered numerous interesting indie games. But, one catches the eye for its quirky concept. Titled Unko Technica, this retro-inspired side-scrolling game lets you play a protagonist that is literally a turd striving to make its way to a toilet. For those curious, "Unko" means "poop."
Player controls is simple: press a one button to leap. Across one hundred fifty levels, encounter tough enemies and visit a shop to acquire outfits for your dung hero.
Time your movements carefully, since one mistake means starting over. Leap using air pockets to launch the poop higher, cross fragile ledges, and interact with triggers to open hidden paths. Collect coins to purchase challenging game content in which the action gets crazy.
In terms of design, the game features eye-catching level designs and an amazing music score. The simple visual style with morphing abstract forms evokes memories of players of beloved games like Earthbound.
Even though difficult to think of other games where you play as a piece of feces, video games frequently included toilet humor. For instance, in Death Stranding, players create throwables from protagonist waste. Examples include Palworld and Ark: Survival Evolved utilize feces as fertilizer. Naturally, this theme appears a lot in Obsidian's South Park RPG The Stick of Truth.
Despite its silly premise, Unko Technica has already received notable recognition, like winning at Bandai Namco's GYAAR Studio in 2023. The demo is available at present on Steam, with the full game set to debut on computers in the fall.
