Djokovic Delivers Caution to Jannik Sinner: Suspension Will Hang Over Him Like a "Cloud"
The tennis star has warned Jannik Sinner that his three-month doping suspension will linger over his career as a constant shadow – and raised doubts about the timing of the penalty in the previous season.
Details of the Suspension
The Italian player served a three-month prohibition in February 2025 after the global anti-doping body accepted his explanation that a banned anabolic steroid, the steroid clostebol, had been ingested unintentionally.
"That cloud will follow him just as the cloud of Covid will follow me, for the rest of his, or my career," the champion remarked in a discussion on a popular YouTube program.
"It's just something that, it was so significant, and when that happens, over time it will fade, but I believe it won't fully vanish. There will inevitably exist a specific segment of individuals that will always try to bring that forward."
Djokovic's Perspective
Djokovic expressed belief that Sinner, a regular practice partner, "had no intentional involvement", but he then scrutinized how the player arranged to complete his ban without sitting out any major tournaments.
"The absence of openness, the inconsistency, the convenience [of] the ban occurring between major events, so he avoids skipping important competitions – it's just it was very, very odd," Djokovic added.
Broader Tennis Community Response
"I am dissatisfied with how the situation was managed and you could hear numerous fellow athletes, across both tours, who had some similar situations coming out in the media and complaining that it was a preferable treatment."
