UN Lifts Penalties on Syrian President Prior to Presidential Visit

Security Council representatives gave the green light to a United States-backed measure removing restrictions on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria before his White House visit next week.

He became interim leader subsequent to commanding a revolutionary movement that drove out the former president in winter 2024, ending thirteen long years of civil war.

America's diplomat Mike Waltz at the United Nations stated the United Nations delivered "a strong political signal" that recognised Syria was in "a new era" after Assad's removal.

Sharaa was under global penalties while commanding the Muslim faction HTS, once connected to the extremist organization. Washington eliminated the group from its registry of international terrorist organizations in July.

More Penalties Removed

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab.

The nation's top diplomat applauded the lifting of the penalties, declaring through digital channels: "Syrian officials convey thanks toward America and to friendly nations for assisting the country and its population."

Upcoming White House Meeting

President Sharaa's presidential meeting this coming Monday comes after US President Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa had made "good progress" towards bringing peace to the previously divided state.

Subsequent to their talks, Trump remarked the Syrian leader possessed "a genuine opportunity for national reconciliation".

The pair met on their first occasion in May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia while traveling through Arab nations.

Following that encounter, America's leader characterized him as a "resilient figure" with a "very strong past".

His Islamist group HTS served as al-Qaeda's branch inside the country until he severed ties during 2016.

Earlier American Trip

This week's diplomatic engagement is not Sharaa's first trip to the US this year. During September, he emerged as the initial Syrian president to speak before the United Nations gathering in Manhattan after approximately sixty years.

During his address, he stated the country had been "reclaiming its rightful place within the global community" while showing support toward Gaza's residents.
